Athletes using Twitter to express their inner-most thoughts is nothing new. Shaquille O’Neal seems to have started the craze and made the most of it as he actually replies to people. However, other athletes have gotten into trouble for using Twitter during games. Charlie Villanueva, now a member of the Detroit Pistons, got in trouble with his Milwaukee coaches for Tweeting during halftime. The NFL decided today to not allow Chad Ocho Cinco to Tweet during Cincinnati Bengal games. He didn’t take the ruling lightly and has promised to play by his own rules. As Twitter grows in popularity, we can expect more athletes to speak their mind, even if it’s just telling a girl she looks good, like Shaq does.

The question raised here is: why do we care? That question extends beyond the realm of sports, but in an age where ESPN drops everything to report on Brett Favre’s lunch in the state of Minnesota, why are we voluntarily inundating ourselves with the thoughts of celebrities? What benefits would Tweeting during a game give to the team? Making the locker room atmosphere more public seems like it could be a valuable asset for the opponent as they will understand the psychology of the other team. Nobody knows how much longer Twitter will influence public opinion, but it seems as though sports leagues are having none of it.

Also, will this man win Le Tour? Austinite Lance Armstrong has a decent shot, he is currently in second place, .00 seconds behind the lead.
